Common questions

Is The Focused List really free?

Yes. Everything on the site today is free, and there's no account to create. Paid features are planned, but nothing charges you right now.

Do colleges pay to appear in my results or rank higher?

No. No school can pay to be included, ranked higher, or featured, and there are no ads or sponsored placements anywhere on the site. Rankings come only from your answers weighed against published federal data.

Where does your college data come from?

Every figure comes from published federal sources — primarily the U.S. Department of Education's College Scorecard, with athletics data from EADA, climate normals from NOAA, and campus photos matched through Wikidata by IPEDS UnitID. When a school hasn't reported something, the page says “not yet available” instead of showing an estimate.

How current is the data?

The catalog is a point-in-time pull from College Scorecard's most recent reported cohort, not a live feed. An automated monthly refresh is planned but isn't running yet.

How are Reach, Match, and Safety decided?

From your academic profile compared against each school's real published admission rate and average test scores — not a reputation or prestige score. Your priority ratings then weigh twelve factors, including affordability, how far from home you want to be, class size, field of study, climate, setting, and sports culture, to rank the list.

What happens to my answers and my family's information?

Your answers stay in your browser for that session and aren't tied to an account, because there's no login. We ask for an income bracket only — never an exact income, account numbers, or financial documents. If you enter an email to save your list, that email is the only thing stored.

Which colleges are included?

All 1,737 four-year public and private-nonprofit colleges and universities in the United States. For-profit institutions are excluded.
